CERM signed an MoU with the Department of Environment (DoE) on 03 February 2026 to collaborate on environmental and social management, focusing on capacity building, research, and training in climate change, pollution control, and ecosystem conservation.
The Centre for Environmental and Resource Management (CERM) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Environment (DoE) to enhance collaboration in environmental and social management across Bangladesh. The event was held on 03 February 2026 at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, BUET, Dhaka.
The partnership establishes a comprehensive framework for capacity building, joint research, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing between the DoE and CERM, BUET. The collaboration will include specialized training programs, workshops, development of environmental and social management tools, and collaborative studies addressing serious issues such as climate change, pollution control, water quality, ecosystem conservation, etc. Through this MoU, both institutions aim to strengthen professional capacity, enhance technical skills, and promote knowledge exchange to support effective environmental and social management practices across Bangladesh.
Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Badruzzaman, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, BUET, was present as the Chief Guest of the event. Dr. Nurun Nahar, Director General (Additional Duty), DoE, was present as the special guest in the ceremony. Prof. Dr. Sheikh Mokhlesur Rahman, Director, CERM, BUET, and Mr. A.K.M Rafiqul Islam, Director (Natural Resource Management), DoE, signed the MoU on behalf of the respective institutions. Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Jalil, Dean, Faculty of Civil Engineering, BUET; Prof. Dr. Md. Mafizur Rahman, Department of Civil Engineering, BUET; Prof. Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, Department of Civil Engineering, BUET; Mohammad Nurul Alam Siddique, Environmental Consultant; Dr. Sharmin R. Ara, EMIS Specialist, CERM; Ms. Farhana Mustari, Deputy Director (Natural Resource Management), DoE; and Md. Shariful Haque, Assistant Director, DoE, attended the program. Representatives from the World Bank, Mr. Iqbal Ahmed, Senior Environmental Specialist, and Mr. S. M. Zulkernine, Senior Environmental Specialist, also attended the ceremony.
Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Badruzzaman, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, BUET, emphasized the importance of collaborative and coordinated work among similar government and non-government institutions and the necessity of a shared repository for environmental data. Dr. Nurun Nahar, Director General (Additional Duty), DoE, recommended preparing the plan of action immediately for effective utilization of the developed relationship through mutual engagement of DoE and CERM, BUET.
This milestone agreement marks a promising step toward stronger environmental governance and long-term environmental and social resilience in the development sectors of Bangladesh.
