The Centre for Environmental and Resource Management (CERM), BUET successfully organized the Water Diplomacy Thematic Workshop of the Dhaka Engineering Diplomacy Workshop 2026 on 25 August 2026 at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET)

The workshop was graced by Prof. Dr. Eqramul Hoque, Honorable Vice-Chancellor, BUET, as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Kazi Ehsanul Haque, Director General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, as the Special Guest, along with other distinguished guests and participants from government, academia, industry, and other relevant sectors.
A special acknowledgment goes to Professor Dr. Shafiqul Islam, Tufts University, whose vision and initiative helped bring the Engineering Diplomacy Workshop concept to Bangladesh and set the foundation for this collaborative platform. The Engineering Diplomacy approach seeks to connect rigorous engineering and scientific reasoning with the realities of people, institutions, politics, and context to develop pathways that are credible, acceptable, and feasible.
Under the theme “Renewal of the Ganges Water Treaty: What Can Bangladesh Do Now?”, the workshop brought together diverse perspectives to move beyond diagnosis and explore credible, acceptable, and feasible pathways for action. Through expert discussions and collaborative group work, participants examined the scientific, social, and institutional dimensions of the issue and worked toward actionable decision pathways and near-term actions.
The workshop followed a problem-focused and action-oriented approach, with the goal of translating knowledge and dialogue into practical steps that can be pursued and assessed ahead of the January 2027 follow-up.
