Training of Trainers Program on Labor Management and Occupational Health & Safety Concludes Successfully


A comprehensive Training of Trainers (TOT) program focusing on Labor Management and Occupational Health & Safety issues has successfully concluded, preparing a new cadre of trainers to enhance safety and management practices at project sites. The program aimed to equip Sub-Assistant Engineers, contractors, contractor representatives, and site managers with the necessary skills to effectively implement and oversee these critical areas.

The TOT was conducted in three batches, with Batch 1 held from November 26 to 28, 2023, Batch 2 from December 9 to 11, 2023, and Batch 3 from January 23 to 25, 2024. A total of 75 participants completed the training, benefiting from a meticulously developed manual designed to support their roles as trainers in the field.

This initiative marks a significant step towards improving labor management and occupational health standards across project sites, fostering a safer and more efficient working environment.

Successful Completion of Capacity Development Program on Environmental and Social Risk Management in World Bank-Funded Projects


A comprehensive Professional Capacity Development Program on Managing Environmental and Social (ES) Risks in World Bank-Funded Projects successfully concluded, strengthening technical and institutional capacities in line with the World Bank's Environmental and Social Framework (ESF). The program, conducted over three months from February 10 to May 18, 2024, provided an in-depth understanding of the ESF and its ten Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs).

The course featured 14 weekly sessions, each lasting three hours, and combined theoretical knowledge with practical case studies. This approach enabled participants to enhance their skills in ES risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and the preparation of essential documentation.

A total of 41 participants attended the program, gaining valuable expertise to effectively manage environmental and social risks, ensuring sustainable project outcomes in compliance with World Bank guidelines.

Senior Officials Complete Orientation on Environmental and Social Framework and Standards


A two-day orientation course on the Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs), and related documentation was successfully conducted on April 29-30, 2024. This specialized training was designed for senior-level officials, including Project Directors, Deputy Project Directors, officials from various ministries, and public representatives.

The course aimed to enhance the participants' ability to effectively oversee the preparation of ES documents by their teams, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment with the World Bank's standards. Eight senior officials attended the training, gaining valuable insights into the oversight and management of environmental and social aspects within their respective projects.

This initiative marks an important step in strengthening the capacity of senior officials to uphold and implement rigorous ES standards, promoting sustainable project outcomes.

Basic Environmental and Social Framework Course Equips Participants with Practical Skills for World Bank-Financed Projects


A specialized short-term training on the Basic Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) was successfully conducted from May 2 to 6, 2024, aimed at preparing essential Environmental and Social (ES) documents such as Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA), Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMP), and Environmental and Social Commitment Plans (ESCP).

Designed for real-world application in World Bank-financed projects in Bangladesh, the course focused on equipping participants with practical skills to navigate complex regulatory frameworks and ensure responsible and sustainable project implementation.

The training was attended by 30 participants, who now possess enhanced capabilities to develop and manage ES documents effectively, contributing to the successful oversight of environmental and social risks in their respective projects.

Comprehensive Training on Occupational Health and Safety for Construction and Power Sectors Successfully Completed


A focused training program on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) for the building construction, road construction, and power sectors was successfully completed, offering comprehensive insights into critical aspects of workplace safety and compliance.

The training covered a range of essential topics, including OHS concepts, legal frameworks, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe work practices, fire prevention, and effective site management. Participants were also trained in safe methods for excavation, material handling, heavy machinery movement, pile foundation work, formwork, and scaffolding, with particular emphasis on fall prevention strategies.

A total of 27 participants attended the program, enhancing their understanding and application of OHS standards, contributing to safer and more compliant workplaces in their respective sectors.

Successful Completion of Geo-Enabling Initiative for Monitoring and Supervision (GEMS) Training Program


The Geo-Enabling Initiative for Monitoring and Supervision (GEMS) training program has successfully concluded, equipping participants with essential skills in digital data collection and analysis to enhance project monitoring and supervision.

Participants received hands-on training in the use of advanced tools such as ODK Collect and KoBoToolbox, learning to design, deploy, and analyze surveys and monitoring frameworks effectively. The program was conducted in two batches, with Batch 1 held from May 21 to 23, 2024, and Batch 2 from October 5 to 7, 2024.

A total of 34 participants completed the training, gaining valuable expertise in leveraging digital tools to improve the efficiency and accuracy of project monitoring processes.



Training on Environmental and Social Issues in Bidding Documents Successfully Concluded


A comprehensive training program on Environmental and Social (ES) issues in bidding documents was successfully conducted, offering participants practical insights into critical aspects of compliance with ESF criteria in bid document preparation.

The training focused on key topics, including the integration of International Competitive Bidding (ICB) and National Competitive Bidding (NCB) documentation, along with specific components such as the Contractor's Environmental and Social Management Plan (C-ESMP), Labor Management Plan (LMP), and the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM).

The program, held on November 26, 2024, was attended by 31 participants, who gained valuable knowledge on incorporating ES requirements into the bidding process to ensure regulatory compliance and promote sustainable project outcomes.



CERM-BUET's Grand Ceremony Marks a Milestone in Environmental and Social Risk Management


On November 4, 2023, the Center for Environmental and Resource Management (CERM) at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) hosted a prestigious Certificate Awarding Ceremony to honor the successful completion of a comprehensive professional capacity development course on 'Managing Environmental and Social Risks in World Bank Funded Projects.' This event, a collaboration between CERM-BUET and the World Bank, marked a significant step in enhancing the knowledge and skills of participants, who included national consultants, environmental and social specialists, project directors, and other key stakeholders in project management.

Over the course of several weeks, the program focused on various Environmental and Social Standards (ESS), emphasizing the critical role of managing environmental and social risks in project lifecycles. The ceremony welcomed distinguished guests, including Professor Dr. Satya Prasad Majumder, the Honorable Vice Chancellor of BUET, as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Abdul Jabbar Khan served as the Special Guest, and Professor Dr. Md. Shafiul Bari as the Guest of Honor. Professor Dr. Md. Mafizur Rahman, the Director of CERM, BUET, presided over the event.

The highlight of the ceremony was the certificate distribution, recognizing the dedication and commitment of the participants to promoting sustainable project management practices in line with Environmental and Social Standards (ESS). The event was made possible through the generous support of the World Bank and served as a testament to CERM's ongoing efforts to train and empower professionals for a more environmentally and socially responsible world.
