Opening Ceremony of 14 week- Professional Capacity Development Program on Managing Environmental and Social Risks
The Opening Ceremony of the Professional Capacity Development Program on Managing Environmental and Social Risks in World Bank Funded Projects was held on February 8, 2025, at the International Training Network (ITN), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka. The event aimed to enhance the skills of professionals in managing environmental and social risks associated with World Bank-funded projects. The ceremony began with the registration of 37 participants, including professionals from various government, non-governmental, and academic sectors, who hold roles such as Environmental & Social Safeguard Experts, Social Development & Gender Specialists, Compliance Officers, and Risk Assessment Professionals.

The ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of Professor Dr. A. B. M. Badruzzaman, the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of BUET, who served as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Professor Dr. Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of BUET, and Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Jalil, the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUET, who attended as Special Guests. The program was presided over by Professor Dr. Sheikh Mokhlesur Rahman, the Director of CERM, BUET, who chaired the proceedings.
A special acknowledgment was given to Iqbal Ahmed, Senior Environmental Specialist from The World Bank, for his invaluable contributions and insights as a Special Guest. His participation underscored the collaborative effort between global organizations and academic institutions in advancing the field of environmental and social risk management.
The ceremony proceeded with enlightening speeches from the distinguished guests, who highlighted the critical role of managing environmental and social risks in World Bank-funded projects. Following the speeches, the certificates were formally awarded to the successful participants of the course, acknowledging their dedication and accomplishments throughout the program.
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Professor Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, of the Department of Civil Engineering, BUET, who expressed gratitude to all the attendees, guests, and participants for their contributions and support. This ceremony served as an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the professional competencies of individuals involved in the management of environmental and social risks in development projects.
